Two-Day Masterclass "Deepening therapy through Focusing / Guiding the inner relationship" with Agathi Lakioti, Ph.D., assisted by Dr. phil. Emma Smith

If you’re a therapist who has completed all four levels of Inner Relationship Focusing (the experiential method developed by Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin), you may already be integrating aspects of your own Focusing practice into your therapeutic work. Yet, you may also sense that bringing Focusing within the broader context of psychotherapy requires more nuanced skill. This masterclass offers a deep exploration of how Focusing can be incorporated into psychotherapy, whether in key moments within a session or through longer, more structured Focusing processes. You’ll learn ways of integrating the essence of Focusing into your therapeutic approach so that it supports the client’s unfolding process and deepens their connection with themselves.
The course will draw from both Gendlin’s original Focusing method and the Inner Relationship Focusing approach of Cornell and McGavin, as well as the combined experience of both trainers and insights from a research study on the use of Focusing by experienced EFT therapists.
As Gendlin wrote, “Focusing makes all other methods more effective by putting them in relation to the body’s felt sense.” This masterclass will show how that principle can come alive in therapy, enhancing your existing methods without changing them, and allowing your work to be more present, embodied, and responsive.

Objective

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Recognize and support felt senses as they arise naturally in the therapeutic interaction.

• Help clients get felt senses.

• Support the client’s presence and self-compassion as they engage with inner experience.

• Listen in an experiential way, tracking felt meaning and process rather than content alone.

• Integrate Focusing principles within diverse therapeutic approaches, enhancing rather than replacing existing methods.

Target Group

This course is ideal for therapists, counselors, and mental health professionals from all backgrounds, who have also completed all 4 training levels of Inner Relationship Focusing (as developed by Ann Weiser Cornell and Barbara McGavin) and are interested in transferring their Focusing skills more effectively into their therapy sessions.

Method

• Theoretical input: A concise, practice-oriented overview of how to integrate and guide Focusing processes within therapy.

• Practice in triads: Participants take turns guiding, being guided, and offering feedback, developing skills through direct experience.

• Demonstrations: Live demos or video examples to illustrate key aspects of Focusing in therapy.

• Supervision component: Optional space for participants to bring their own questions for discussion.
